The professed concept of this album – “a loose history of the music and traditions of New Orleans” – doesn’t sound that different from the rest of Dr John’s career, but no need to quibble. The concept isn’t what matters here. What matters is that the good doctor is on pretty good form – check out the title track – and that he’s aided and abetted by an impressive bunch of guests, including Mavis Staples, BB King and Willie Nelson. The album’s best collaborations come from Cyril Neville, on the haunting down-tempo tale of Marie Laveau, and an irresistible romp with Randy Newman through I Ate up the Apple Tree. We can only hope that some smart record company executive realises the Newman/John double act is a collaboration that demands to be revisited.
